The drain contains a sort of barrel trap that can be removed for ease of cleaning. The bathroom shop says the drain and trap are their standard issue and would cost around £40 if bought separately. Water is running down the drain at the same time that it’s filling the washer. On newer washers, it takes about 20-30 seconds for the machine to sense the load and engage the drive system after the water has stopped filling.

If I disperse the suds during the shower the vortex resumes and all is ok. The pipe behind it has slipped down into the crawl space, so it was draining the water as fast as it came in. The water backs up a bit due to the decreased swirl and when the shower is switched off I'm left with suds around the drain and a scum in the surrounding shower tray. Lift the nearest inspection cover and see whether that restores normal flushing and also that the flushed water comes past nice and briskly rather than as a trickle. If you have a downstream blockage youll get positive pressure and the symptoms you describe. The workers are given strict access hours so Eddie can make sure Christopher is out. Air admittance valves only fix issues arising from negative pressure in the drain. All is ok until shampoo or soap is used at which point the suds collect around the drain and the vortex swirl that was taking the water away stops. The air puffs with chalky clouds as they break the old bath away from the wall, there’s high pitched buzzing for hours on end as they use a diamond saw out on the front lawn to cut new tiles, and there’s a thick, cloying smell that hangs around as they start grouting and sealing. All of which are signs that there may be an issue with the air admittance valve. A 'rapid flow' drain/trap has approx 2 metres of pipe where it joins the pipework of the original bath drain, then another metre or so to the outside wall. Potential issues with air admittance valves Sometimes unwanted smells may be emitted, gargling sounds may occur or wastewater comes up from the soil pipes into the sink.
